In her one-woman show, New York icon CANDACE BUSHNELL, the international best-selling novelist, journalist, television producer and radio show host, takes us on a whirlwind tour of New York City, from Studio 54 to “Sex and the City” to “Lipstick Jungle” and beyond, sharing her remarkable philosophy through stories of fashion, literature and sex while pouring cosmos in Manolos.
“In 1998 when ‘Sex and the City’ launched on HBO, dating was very different than it is today,” Bushnell told Robin Jay, Editor of Eloquence. “It has nothing to do with age, but rather all the new technologies that serve as distractors – like the internet, social media, phone apps, digital gaming and online dating. In-person relationships have taken a back seat. It’s so much easier to be single these days.”
Bushnell’s humor and entertaining story telling of her life, dating and sex is set in an on-stage recreation of her New York City apartment. You’ll laugh til you cry!
Her story starts when a young girl growing up in Glastonbury, CT – a farming and equestrian town – dreams of becoming a writer and living under the big lights in New York City. Bushnell was 19 when her Mom put her on a bus dressed in her Loehmann’s finest headed to Manhattan. She studied writing at Rice and NYU and was hired by Simon and Schuster to write at children’s story.
“I was paid $1,000 and thought ‘I’m Rich!’ Back then, that paid for three of four months of rent.”
Bushnell’s one-woman show recounts the ups and downs of her quest to make it big in New York. “My girlfriends pursued acting by waiting tables. I tried waitressing, but that lasted all of three days,” she said laughing. Candace freelanced for multiple women’s magazines, eventually developing her own brand of writing about women and dating.
In 1993, the New York Observer hired Bushnell and within a year she launched the humorous column, “Sex And The City,” about her and her friends’ dating experiences. Bushnell later compiled her stories into a book by the same name, which inspired the HBO series, two sequel movies, an NBC television show “Lipstick Jungle” and the CW show “The Carrie Diaries”.
“I created Carrie Bradshaw, my alter ego, so that my parents wouldn’t know my job required me to visit sex clubs,” Bushnell said. “But when they eventually found out, they were supportive of my career. One day I was out with my mother when a woman came up and said, ‘I recognize you – you’re the one who wrote that book!’ My mom spoke up and said, “Yes she is, and I’m very proud of her!”
