When the lights went down in the city (of Sunrise) and the sun shined on the Bay (near Fort Lauderdale) on February 12, JOURNEY’S 50th Anniversary Freedom Tour brought the house down with lots of lovin’, touchin’, squeezin’ of epic rock ballads at the Amerant Bank Arena.
JOURNEY features founder Neal Schon (lead guitarist/backing vocals), Jonathan Cain (keyboards, backing vocals), Arnel Pineda (lead vocals), Deen Castronovo (drums, vocals), Jason Derlatka (keyboards, vocals) and Todd Jensen (bass). The veteran entertainers transported the audience back to their years of youth in the 80s, as they were on their feet swaying and singing along with every well-known lyric.
50-something Pineda – the lead singer from the Philipines the band found on Youtube after Steve Perry’s departure – has a voice virtually identical to Perry’s and a vivaciousness that kept the crown pumped up! The musicality and instrumental talents of every 70-something band member – including a sensational vocal solo by drummer Castronovo – had the audience mesmerized. It’s no wonder JOURNEY was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 and a star prominent on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.
Since the group’s formation in 1973, JOURNEY has earned 19 top 40 singles, 25 gold and platinum albums, and has sold over 100 million albums globally. Their “Greatest Hits” album is certified 15 times-platinum, making JOURNEY one of the few bands to ever have been diamond-certified, and their song “Don’t Stop Believin'” has been streamed over one billion times alone.
